He looked surprise at such a question and then simply responded, "because I knew I had to marry the girl that flew over 5000 miles to be with me..."
I remember the day he asked me to go to Romania during the summer. I had business trips all month with a one week break. It would be exhausting to fly to Romania and then catch a flight directly after for Mexico City without any chance of recovering the jet lag. However, I never gave it a second thought, if I didn't fly out in August - I wouldn't have seen him until Christmas.
I flew over 24 hours each way to spend five glorious days with him - it was important enough for him to ask so it was important enough to make it work. That week he proposed.
Long distance relationships are never easy. There are a lot of sacrifices that have to be done and there has to be a serious commitment to making it work.
People always thought I was crazy to have a relationship with someone so far away - someone whose work schedule was worse than my own. Very few people understood why I would even go through the hassle. The late night phone calls, the trips back and forth, the hundreds of emails.
In my heart I knew - I knew that he was worth the effort. I knew that he had a special place in my heart. After 3 years of marriage and 1.5 kids later, there is no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice.
